Mathieu Fournier et Vincent Fournier

The original draft of Sommelier Virtuel website started with the passion of two brothers, lovers of wine and gastronomy. We learned to taste and enjoy wine at family parties and  celebrations. Our parents studied in France and thereafter, wine and cheese were always on the table.

Mathieu Fournier, engineer. I enjoy wine tasting since 1986. I travelled to France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and California. I first developed a database for wines and a computer program that lets you search and rank the wines according to their characteristics and quality (number of stars or rating). I created this software for my own use, thinking that I could sell it. Finally, as the best bottles of wine, I decided that the right thing to do was to share it. The database and software have been integrated into this Sommelier Virtuel website. See my evaluations of wines in my tasting book.

Vincent Fournier, anthropologist consultants. During my studies, between 1994 and 1999, I worked in french restaurants where I learned a lot about wine tasting. I then made up a cellar, while reading extensively on wine. Having studied ethnologiy, I went to study the making of wine in a community in southern Italy. I lived a year in Italy to conduct a field research on wine production and marketing in the context of globalization for my Ph. D thesis. I have developed a specialized knowledge which is unique in the world of wine. I am the one who  has the title of editor for wine reviewa. See my evaluations of wines in my tasting book.

Our philosophy

We are both wine lovers and have decided to develop this website to have fun, continue to learn about the fascinating world of wine, and have an excuse to enjoy the most beautiful bottles of wine . This website is not linked to any interest of the wine industry (producers, agencies, etc.)..

The philosophy of Sommelier Virtuel is to counterbalance the influence of major tasters, commentators and columnists of this world. Our goal is to truly democratize the taste of wine.

While many purists of "terroir" can criticize this fact, it is normal that producers should be attentive to the tastes and preferences of their target markets. A friend and Italian producer was telling me that if he made his wine according to tradition, he would do with his feet, and it would be like a syrup in which he would add water and various herbs. Thus, the Greeks and Romans of antiquity produced and consumed their wine. But who today, who would such a wine? Where it becomes a problem is when producers try to replicate the taste of targeted wines whose style is the taste of influential wine tasters in order to receive a good review and try to get fast commercial success.

The goal of Sommelier Virtuel is to establish a democratic tool to taste and review wines. The more visitors and reviewers, the rating will become more and more accurate and reflect the taste of the majority of wine tasters. Maybe, a specific taste will emerge and develop among the members of Virtual Sommelier. In this case, the wine rating will be the combined rating of many individuals, not the act of a single person.
